Oregano is a perennial herb high in antioxidant activity, due to a high level of flavonoids and phenolic acids. In addition, oregano has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens such as listeria. It may be useful for its levels of antioxidants and its food preserving qualities, and in some cultures, oregano has even been used to relieve coughs.
The ORAC value is expressed in micromoles of Trolox Equivalents per 100 grams of sample (this is the laboratory measure of ORAC).
