Acai is generally regarded as an overhyped and overpriced exotic superfood. It's still good. Avoid mlm ripoff prices and stay away from the fancy wine bottle watered down with "proprietary blends". You can buy Acai cheaper if you shop around. Buy it freeze dried or in juice concentrate form. Those are about the best prices you can find. Don't feel left out if cranberries, purple/black grapes, and blueberries are about all you can afford for top berries. These have lots of antioxidant power, are easily available, and are far cheaper cheaper.

Cinnamon is loaded with potent antioxidants and minerals. It's a taste delight. You want the lighter tan colored cinnamon from Sri Lanka because it contains little of the toxic substance that the cassia variety contains. The othr kind of cinnamon has been outlawed in Germany. Sri Lanka/Ceylon cinnamon is light colored, soft to the touch, and sweet to the taste.

Re: ANTIOXIDANT SUPERFOOD LIST.

Anyone have information on the possibility of too much antioxidants and possible unhealthy effects? Something was mentioned in an earlier post (can't find now) in response to someone listing their daily ORAC regimen for breakfast, lunch, dinner (cloves, cacoa, etc.) with extremely high concentrations. Is more better?

Certainly you can't OD on antioxidants from food (fruits, vegetables, grains, juices). Whatever you don't absorb will just pass through. I'd be weary of some of the highly concentrated volatile oils like clove though; clove can be toxic. I use a little dash of true ceylon cinnamon instead. As for the supplements, there are many great antioxidants, but do your research. For example, curcumin (turmeric) or silymarin (milk thistle) both have effects on liver enzymes involved in drug metabolism and can cause interactions with prescription drugs.

To be on the safe side, stick to whole food antioxidants. You'll get PLENTY of antioxidants if you just add a few high orac items from this site to your diet (e.g. walnuts, dried cranberries, apples, grape juice), and won't have to worry about safety. The values on this site are very useful: many everyday fruits and vegetables surpass the ORAC activity of the "superfruits" and supplements.

Esoteric17:

Right on. There's plenty in everyday whole and juiced colorful veggies and fruits not to mention beans, nuts, spices, grains.

More is not always better--there's points of diminishing return whether it's injesting antioxidants, exercising, or spending 80 hours a week at the office.

On the Orac Score table it shows Acai as having more orac score than Maqui berry. Why is that? I thought Maqui was something like 3 times more powerful than Acai? Be great if someone could help me set the record straight on this?

PhillipJTerry,

What is misleading about the ORAC test of Acai is that the test was performed with "freeze-dried" Acai berries. Freeze dried berries are extremely condensed and dry. In a comparison with regular wet berries or even berries dried to the point of becoming raisin like, the freeze dried berries would have a massive edge. 100 grams of them would be far far more potent than wet acai berries. A real test of the Acai berry would if the sample were taken right from the rain forest. The freeze drying process makes Acai appear far more powerful than it actually is. Wet Acai berries are likely no more potent antioxidant wise than wet wild blue berries or wet wild cranberries.

Are omega-3 pills that you can buy at a vitamin store have any mercury in them? I just read from another question I asked that omega-3 fatty acids is good to take if your pregnant, but to be careful about mercury levels. Do omega-3 fatty acid pills have any mercury in them? Can I just have my wife take those pills instead of eating fish?
