How long the antioxidants last in our organism ?

Postby dsb9000 » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:24 am

Hello

1. I would like to know how many hours the antioxidant effect last in each item.

Daily, i´m eating the follow items:

cloves: (morning: 0,5g / afternoon: 0,5g)
cocoa powder (morning: 25g / afternoon: 25g)
cinnamon: (morning: 5g / afternoon: 5g)
oregano:(lunch: 5g / afternoon: 5g)
bran rice: (lunch:10g)
kiwi: 2 units

I´ve read that milk inhibit the antioxidant absorption.
2.So , how long before and after drinking milk we should wait to eat antioxidant food ?
3. Is there any others foods that act against antioxidants ? Which are they ?

Thanks for help.

ps: It´s my second post. I don´t why, but the first one didn´t work.

Hi dsb9000:

"1. I would like to know how many hours the antioxidant effect last in each item.

It would be next to impossible to answer this question with any precision. First the staying times of many of these antioxidant sources in the human body is
unknown. Second if other antioxidants were present in your body they may serve to recycle some of the antioxidants. For instance if someone took Vitamin C and E in combination with alpha Lipoic acid, the alpha lipoic acid would help recycle the antioxidants. Most of the foods and spices you mentioned contain a wide variety of differening antioxidants so no doubt some antioxidant recycling is going on. This list would give you a hellacious amount of antioxidants and maybe even a tummyache. Cloves (2x .5 grams), cinnamon (2x 5 grams), and oregano (2x 5 grams) could be a bit rough on the gut. Unless your cinnamon is the light brown, soft, and sweet tasting cinnamon from Ceyon/Sri Lanka, your cinnamon may contain a toxin outlawed in Germany. Oregano in high doses also contains a naturally toxic substance. Be aware that scientists tell us that anywhere from 5000 to 6000 (The Department of Agriculture says even less) on the ORAC scale is more than enough antioxidants for optimal human health. What you are taking is in the hundreds of thousands. 50 grams of natural cocoa is well over 80,000 on the ORAC scale. Cinnamon, cloves. and oregano pack and enormous antioxidant punch. "More is not better". Too much of some antioxidants may create a pro-oxidant situation.

Yes with the catechins in blueberries and green tea, but apparently not with cocoa according to more recent studies.

"So , how long before and after drinking milk we should wait to eat antioxidant food ? Is there any others foods that act against antioxidants ? Which are they ?" dsb900

I haven't found any exact information on the wait time. My best guess for average folks would be from an an hour and a half to two hours between milk
consumption and those antioxidants affected by cassein (The milk protein that binds with some catechins)

I'm unaware, at this time, of other foods and substances that nullify antioxidants. I'm sure they are out there.

The cinnamon i´m using is light and a bit "sweet".
The dark one is really strong and the taste i don´t liked. That one i´m not using.

Well , so i will decrese the amount and keep just the variety.

But, i would like to keep a high antioxidant diet ( heathy, of course) mainly by using cocoa powder.

1. I´ve heard about some benefits about eating 50g-100g of chocolate (50% of cocoa). But most chocolates have 4X more fat and 2X more calories than pure cocoa. How i´m vegetarian, maybe this can compensate the 5 grams of total fat obtained by cocoa powder.
I´m not eating chocolate and neither candy by all the day, just pure cocoa powder (25g morning + 25g afternoon) with some fruits and water. Even so can be unheatlhy ?

2. Based on actual studies, what should be the healthy amount of cocoa powder to eat daily ? Eating one time is worse than eating half ,twice, along the day ?

3. Is useless surpassing 5000-6000 ORAC ? What number i shouldn´t surpass ?

4. 4 soap spoons daily of oregano is toxic, or not healthy ?

Thank you

I promess to contain my doubts

Hi dsb 9000,

"The cinnamon i´m using is light and a bit "sweet".

Sounds like you are using Ceylon/Sri Lanka cinnamon--the right stuff.

"I would like to keep a high antioxidant diet ( heathy, of course) mainly by using cocoa powder." dsb9000

A high antioxidant diet coming from a wide mix of colorful veggies, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and beans will put you on the right track. There's nothing wrong with natural unsweetened cocoa. It's cheap and easily available. I slug down a cup several times a week.

Pure natural unsweetened cocoa is fine. 25mg & 25mg should be okay.

"2. Based on actual studies, what should be the healthy amount of cocoa powder to eat daily ? Eating one time is worse than eating half ,twice, along the day ?"

One or two cups of hot cocoa made with unsweetened natural cocoa powder should be okay. Since unsweetened natural cocoa powder is loaded with antioxidants spread it out. (80,000 on the ORAC scale) Remember your antioxidants better be of different varieties--many colorful fruits, veggies, nuts, beans, and whole grains. There are no studies on what the healthy amount of cocoa powder is to consume daily.

"3. Is useless surpassing 5000-6000 ORAC ? What number i shouldn´t surpass ?" dsb9000

You probably need not surpass 5000 to 6000 ORAC. It won't do harm to go multiple times that amount--but it appears unneeded. Stratospheric amounts of antioxidants go unutilized by the body and get flushed down the toilet in our waste.
Past that point your body can only utilize so much and really huge numbers may promote pro-oxidants with some antioxidants. ORAC scales are relatively new--not a whole lot is known about the challenges of many antioxidants or the need for large quantities of them.

"4. 4 soap spoons daily of oregano is toxic, or not healthy ?" dsb9000

Are you saying soup spoons? The main problem is oregano oil which can contain thymol which is toxic to the liver. Apparently some varieties of oregano contain more thymol the liver toxin.

soap spoon = table spoon (improving my english yet...)

Well, now i´m using just teaspoons of some spices. I´ve also decrease the amount of cocoa powder to 25g daily.

Thanks
